Winemaker, Te Whare Ra Wines
One of New Zealand’s absolute favourite Aussie import winemakers, Anna Flowerday has the wine industry well and truly flowing through her veins. Hailing from the McLaren Vale, Flowerday comes from a wine industry family dating back 5 generations, so it was absolutely her destiny to study Science then Oenology at the University of Adelaide before embarking on a 7-year stint making wine at Hardys.
But it was the lure of creating her own family wines organically and biodynamically, which led to her and her husband Jason purchasing Te Whare Ra in Marlborough in 2003. To say the last 13 years has been a whirlwind for this young couple is an understatement. Two sets of twins in close succession, combined with a major restoration project returning the winery and vineyard to its former glory, has meant the lives of this young couple are a million miles an hour. How Anna also finds time to be a Senior Judge and Panel leader at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, The Royal Easter Wine Show, the Spiegelau International Wine Competition, the International Aromatics Competition AND regularly lends her tastebuds to the Cuisine Magazine panel, beggars belief.
The pinot noir bug infected Anna over 20 years ago and she’s now made pinot noir from Oregon, Marlborough and the Yarra Valley.
