‘World class multitasker’ Maynard Keenan, is looking forward to speaking at the event to explore and examine how his personal experiences in the worlds of rock music and art have led to a beautiful collision in wine. In the mid-1990’s, Keenan (lead singer and lyricist for alternative metal and art-rock acts Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle) quit LA and moved to Arizona to begin a connection with the land which involved becoming a modern pioneer of growing grapes in the desert. Twenty years on and he’s the owner of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards (named after Keenan’s trademark mohawk toupee and in homage to the pubic hair wigs worn by prostitutes back in the mists of time – as you do) He’s become a tireless champion for the growth of Arizona’s wine industry, and he’s making wine from mourvedre, tempranillo, chenin blanc, aglianico, montepulciano, malvasia, chardonnay, syrah, petit sirah, barbera, merlot, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and nebbiolo. Pretty much everything except pinot noir. In addition to overseeing the harvest across his multi-varietal vineyards, he’s also releasing albums, touring and embarking on hectic media promotion schedules which soak up every other second of his life outside of wine.
