Winemaker, Greystone Wines
The wine region of Waipara stretches out across North Canterbury under the unmistakeable cloud formation known as the Northwestern Arch. Grapes grow with gusto on both the gravel and clay soils on the plains and up on the ancient, mineral-rich limestone hills. The region is making a serious name for itself with pinot noir as the rising star. Having worked harvests at Domaine d’Eugenie in Vosne-Romanee, Weingut Leitz in Rheingau and Chehalem Wines in the Willamette Valley, Dom Maxwell has been the winemaker at Greystone since its inception just over a decade ago. It didn’t take long for the awards to start flowing in either. Decanter Magazine even named Greystone as ‘Waipara’s Most Exciting New Producer’. There’s a unique energy and tension in Dom’s wines, so it won’t surprise you to know that he’s an adrenaline junkie, snowboarding and mountainbiking in his time off (which isn’t often considering he’s also a devoted dad), but when it comes to the crunch his attention is firmly on creating sensational wines
Dom was also awarded New Zealand Winemaker of the Year at the Winestate Magazine Awards in 2011- and that just fuelled his fire to keep creating stunning, world-class wines.
